SUMMARY:Black and Indigenous Led Prayer Circle and Meditation
DESCRIPTION:“In Loving Memory of Kevin Locke” – \nAn uplifting devotional space created and led by Black and Indigenous individuals. The Baha’i Writings proclaim special spiritual designations for each of these unique populations. Through cultural meditative expressions in art and philosophy followed by a united prayer circle\, join us in celebration of the vision of the oneness of mankind. \nWe dedicate this episode in loving memory of Kevin Locke\, who passed away on October 1st. Kevin Locke (Lakota name: Tȟokéya Inážiŋ meaning “The First to Arise”) was of Dakota descent of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and Anishinaabe of White Earth. He was a preeminent player of the Native American flute\, a traditional storyteller\, cultural ambassador\, recording artist and educator. He was best-known for his hoop dance\, The Hoop of Life. \nWhen asked in 2012 about his mission in life\, Locke said\, “All of the people have the same impulses\, spirits\, and goals. Through my music and dance\, I want to create a positive awareness of oneness of humanity.” \nWe share our heartfelt sympathy with Kevin’s wife\, Ceylan\, daughter Patricia\, and his adult children and grandchildren as we mourn our collective loss of this exceptional man.

DESCRIPTION:Fatima Laster is a self-taught interdisciplinary visual artist and the owner-operator of 5 Points Art Gallery + Studios. She will share her personal art practice which employs various media and what she considers a hybrid of accessible\, or non-traditional fine art materials\, coupled with traditional art materials and found objects\, aiming to disarm and broaden the reach and understanding surrounding the themes of social\, racial\, and gender politics embedded within her compositions\, inequities in which she also protests and activates the community about. \nShe will also share how she created the 5 Points Art Gallery + Studios. This mixed-use art space located in the 5 Points neighborhood on the north side of Milwaukee\, Wisconsin serves as a space for the increased representation and the collection of local\, national\, and international contemporary fine and outsider artwork produced by artists of color.
