Henderson” \nDr. Henderson is an elected member of the National Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá’í’s of the U.S.\, a U.S. Federal Commissioner on the Martin Luther King\, Jr. Federal Holiday Commission\,\ninvolved in the creation of the California State Supreme Court Commission on Race and Ethnic Bias\, and a Board Chair of Community Neighborhood Technologies (CNT)\, a not-for-profit organization that focuses on urban sustainability and social equity that received the MacArthur Foundation “Genius” award. The Racial Healing-Justice-Unity Baha’i Inspired Series (RHJU) offers moderated presentations and discussions on the most vital and challenging issue for humanity: eliminating racism. We endeavor to participate in this space with a humble posture of learning\, seeking to elevate our knowledge\, ignite volition and then act.  \nPresentation topics address anti-Black racism\, activities to transform the hearts of humankind and break outworn societal constructs\, efforts and knowledge to increase understanding and acceptance of Black culture\, the global significance of eliminating racism\, acquiring skill sets that thwart racism and promote healing racial trauma\, and more. This is a collaborative space for all who are united by a commonly held commitment to “carrying forward an ever-advancing civilization”\, to which the precedent for that lofty and attainable goal is the eradication of racism. Without that accomplishment there can be no justice and no real peace for humanity.

DESCRIPTION:Topic: “Black Vision: The Baha’i Faith and African American Community Building” with special guest\, Derik Smith \nHistorically speaking\, African American culture has been a great incubator of creativity\, resilience\, and community. Supported by this culture\, Black people in America have worked at the grassroots\, building vibrant communities while also enduring the hardships of racial prejudice and oppression. This presentation focuses on the relationship between the American Baha’i Community and the capacity for constructive resilience that has been cultivated in African American culture. \nDerik Smith is a professor in the Department of Literature at Claremont McKenna College; he is currently chair of the Intercollegiate Department of Africana Studies at the Claremont Colleges. His work is anchored in the analysis of American culture and\, particularly\, African American literary culture. He is the author of many articles\, and the book\, Robert Hayden In Verse: New Histories of African American Poetry and the Black Arts Era. \nFireside Chats are hosted by Dr. Charles Bullock and Tangela Stanley. This dynamic and interactive space\, where the teachings of the Baha’i Faith are shared\, provides an effective tool toward connecting hearts and building vibrant communities. \nEach episode features inspirational devotionals followed by intimate conversations focused on current social challenges such as racism\, gender equity and a variety of other issues that must be addressed before humanity can reach its full potential. \nWe invite you to join us as we strive together to understand our individual and collective life’s purpose exploring the truth of the oneness of mankind.

DESCRIPTION:Fatima Laster is a self-taught interdisciplinary visual artist and the owner-operator of 5 Points Art Gallery + Studios. She will share her personal art practice which employs various media and what she considers a hybrid of accessible\, or non-traditional fine art materials\, coupled with traditional art materials and found objects\, aiming to disarm and broaden the reach and understanding surrounding the themes of social\, racial\, and gender politics embedded within her compositions\, inequities in which she also protests and activates the community about. \nShe will also share how she created the 5 Points Art Gallery + Studios. This mixed-use art space located in the 5 Points neighborhood on the north side of Milwaukee\, Wisconsin serves as a space for the increased representation and the collection of local\, national\, and international contemporary fine and outsider artwork produced by artists of color. DESCRIPTION:“In Loving Memory of Kevin Locke” – \nAn uplifting devotional space created and led by Black and Indigenous individuals. The Baha’i Writings proclaim special spiritual designations for each of these unique populations. Through cultural meditative expressions in art and philosophy followed by a united prayer circle\, join us in celebration of the vision of the oneness of mankind. \nWe dedicate this episode in loving memory of Kevin Locke\, who passed away on October 1st. Kevin Locke (Lakota name: Tȟokéya Inážiŋ meaning “The First to Arise”) was of Dakota descent of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and Anishinaabe of White Earth. He was a preeminent player of the Native American flute\, a traditional storyteller\, cultural ambassador\, recording artist and educator. He was best-known for his hoop dance\, The Hoop of Life. \nWhen asked in 2012 about his mission in life\, Locke said\, “All of the people have the same impulses\, spirits\, and goals. Through my music and dance\, I want to create a positive awareness of oneness of humanity.” \nWe share our heartfelt sympathy with Kevin’s wife\, Ceylan\, daughter Patricia\, and his adult children and grandchildren as we mourn our collective loss of this exceptional man.
