SUMMARY:The Blues Idiom of Abdul-’Baha With Artist and Activist Masud Olufani\, Atlanta\, GA
DESCRIPTION:Masud Olufani will examine the cultural practices of the African American community associated with the color blue\, which is linked to a ‘coolness of being or right moral action’ in West Africa. The conflation of ‘blue’ with the moral imperative to act justly is a dimension of the cultural memory of African Americans\, who have referred to the color in music\, and art as an attitude of balance and peace of mind in the midst of chaos. This quality\, so reflected in the life of Abdu’l Baha\, serves as a conceptual basis for the deep connection between Abdu’l Baha and Black people. \nMasud is Visiting Artist Fellow\, Emory University\, Atlanta\, GA. 2021-22’ He M is an Atlanta based actor\, mixed media artist\, and writer whose studio practice is rooted in the discipline of sculpture. He is a graduate of Morehouse College\, and The Savannah College of Art and Design where he earned an M.F.A. in sculpture in 2013. \nThis event is hosted by The Racial Healing-Justice-Unity Bahá’í-inspired Online Series. SUMMARY:Tschika McBean
DESCRIPTION:This session we will explore the relationship between the pursuit of justice and personal sacrifice. The teachings of the Baha’i Faith describes justice as the best beloved of all things\, an incomparable light that establishes order in the world and promotes tranquility. However\, the establishment of justice requires volition and action\, which in many instances require personal sacrifices. Seemingly\, there seems to be an undeniable link between justice and sacrifice. Moreover\, throughout history\, those who pursued justice practiced endless selflessness. Therefore\, it is incumbent upon those who seek the appearance of unity among men to embrace the sacrifices that underpin its establishment. Tschika’s presentation will trace the work of key individuals in their pursuit of justice.
